Join director, writer, and producer Sam Quigley ‘74 MA’77 for a screening of his newly digitized 1989 documentary Copper, Tin, & Fire: Gongsmithing in Java, followed by a Q and A. The documentary shows the generations-old process of forging knobbed bronze gongs in the workshop of master gamelan instrument-builder Tentrem Sarwanto in Central Java.

Sam Quigley is Director of the Lyman Allen Art Museum and has served as Museum CIO & VP for Collections Management for the Art Institute of Chicago, Director of Digital Information and Technology at the Harvard University Art Museums, and Manager of Collections Information, Associate Curator of European Decorative Arts and Sculpture, and Keeper of Musical Instruments at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
This event has been organized by the World Music Archives & Music Library and is part of Wesleyan’s Bronze Day program, which is free and open to the public.
To hear the sound of bronze, come to the hands-on gamelan workshop from 2:30-3:15 at the World Music Hall, with renowned Javanese musicians, Professors of Music Sumarsam and I.M. Harjito.
